5/5 Stars

If you have ever read Corrie Ten Boom’s memoir The Hiding Place, this book is the perfect complement to it.  The Watchmaker’s Daughter adds depth, insight and emotion to the story Corrie previously told and grants the reader another glimpse into the humbleness, generosity, and true genuine kindness of not only Corrie, but the entire Ten Boom family.  This book is a wonderful read!

Corrie Ten Boom’s story is remarkable and inspiring.  For those who may be unaware, Corrie is the daughter of a watchmaker in the Netherlands during WWII and the Holocaust.  Through her strong faith and staunch resolve to do what is right even at the risk of her own life and freedom, Corrie becomes a part of an underground network to protect the vulnerable, both Jewish and non-Jewish, from Nazi persecution.  She is found out and sent to a concentration camp, but her story does not end there.  The book takes us through her time in the concentration camp focusing on her faith, positivity, and care and concern for others.  We see the relationship between Corrie and her sister, Betsy, who is a beacon of light in a dark time.  The book discusses the redemptive and hopeful life Corrie lived in freedom after WWII, and the positive impact her life and work after the war had on those who are her friends and even those who were her foes. Forgiveness is a huge theme in this book, and Corrie is a shining example of it.

This book is hopeful.  This story is redemptive.  But there is also a lot of sadness in the narrative, so as a reader, expect to feel some deep emotions.  Corrie’s life is a bold and shining testimony of love, faith, courage, and forgiveness.  Her ability to forgive is incredible, and I feel we could all learn from this faith-filled woman with the brave and caring heart. There are some incredible photographs in the book whichjust adds to all that The Watchmaker's Daughter has to offer.
