What can I say other than I absolutely loved The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. There was nothing earth shattering about the storyline or the characters, but Ann Patchett’s rich prose, masterful storytelling ability, and phenomenal character development made this story immensely compelling and utterly engrossing. I look forward to reading more Ann Patchett novels in the future. I hope her other novels are as unputdownable as this one.
But before I delve further into this wonderful novel, I should state that I typically read physical copies of books. However, I chose to listen to the audio version of The Dutch House, and I am so thankful that I did. Narrated by Tom Hanks, his voice adds dimension to the story that would otherwise be missed. He is wonderful to listen to as he leads us through the lives of the characters in The Dutch House.
The Dutch House focuses on the lives of the Conroy siblings: older sister, Maeve, and her younger brother, Danny. Spanning decades, this book explores the intricacies, both good and difficult, of familial relationships and the enduring sibling bond unlike any other. The story centers around a mansion in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania known as the Dutch House where Danny and Maeve spend their childhood before being uprooted and evicted by their stepmother after their father’s untimely death. From their earliest years, to the last, The Dutch House immerses us into the lives of these siblings with elegance and satisfaction. We read of heartbreak and triumph. We read of loss and redemption. We read of wounds that tear relationships apart and resilience that ultimately leads to healing. And not only do we read of these things, but we also feel them.
This story is about life and about living through the good and the hard. This story is about forgiveness. As I said, there is nothing earth shattering among the pages of The Dutch House, but it is full of relatable emotions and is absolutely a satisfactory read. I loved it.
