3/5 Stars

Let the Willows Weep by Sherry Parnell is a good read. I am not sure I would describe it as altogether enjoyable, but it was enthralling and full of depth and strong emotion. It is the story of Birddog Harlin growing up in a poor and dysfunctional mining family and the hardships and heartaches of living such a life. A disappointment to her mother and struggling with the loss of her father in a mining accident, Birddog feels the weight and loneliness of her life’s circumstances. The book takes the reader on a journey through her life and the decisions and paths she sometimes chooses and other times is forced to take. The writing style is beautiful and draws the reader into the emotions of the scenes and characters within the story. The story touches upon some difficult topics but does so in a deeply emotional fashion.

Let the Willows Weep is a story full of sadness and loss, poverty and hardship, forbidden love, survival and heartache. Yet it culminates in a bittersweet and beautiful ending of reconciliation.

I would have ranked the story with 4 stars except that it had an abrupt ending that left some of the story unfinished. But otherwise, it was beautiful prose and highly emotional.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
